This video highlights NASA publications available at many Federal Depository Libraries.

Like our other community videos, this one is posted to our videos page.

great soundtrack

nice job by the obsessive documents librarians! Daniel, can you forward a suggestion for me? Most of the titles listed were blurry so it'd be helpful to list them as subtitles to each slide. Otherwise, this is a great way to highlight collections. I could even see using short videos for instruction sessions :-)

Video quality is very site dependent!

Hi James,

I'll take your suggestion on my next video, especially since I've figured how to do callouts on my software.

But I was surprised at the blurriness at YouTube, since I review all videos before uploading them.

I just checked the video at YouTube and also the copies I posted at the Capitol Hill Broadcasting Network and MySpace.

At both CHBN and MySpace, the video is very sharp and all but one of the titles (Viking) are easily seen.

Is there anyone video-techy who might have thoughts about why that might be? Could it be anything to do with my using MPEG-1 as my upload format?

For the time being, I'll switch the video page link to the CHBN copy. Thanks again for catching the blurriness at YouTube.

better video and hosting service suggestions

I'm not sure why the blurriness at youtube, but the CHBN version is MUCH better! Might I suggest a few other video upload services to use instead of youtube?

Both of these services are more supportive of the public domain and do not include "creative" terms of use (below) that basically allow youtube to reuse your uploaded video in any way they see fit to promote their -- and their successor's! -- business without having to attribute you or pay you royalties etc. Both Our Media- and Internet Archive's terms of use allows users to self-define license type (copyright, creative commons, public domain) and claim no intellectual property rights over uploaded material. Ze Frank had a bit about this in August of last year (careful kids, Ze uses strong language :-) oh and watch the whole clip; Ze also has a funny bit about Bush and vetoes!!).

For clarity, you retain all of your ownership rights in your User Submissions. However, by submitting the User Submissions to YouTube, you hereby grant YouTube a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the User Submissions in connection with the YouTube Website and YouTube's (and its successor's) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the YouTube Website (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels.

Why YouTube?

I actually have accounts at Internet Archive and OurMedia. Haven't used OurMedia in a long time, but the last time I tried uploading a video to InternetArchive, I wasn't successful. All three of the other sites I upload to seem to be very intuitive to upload to.

But the main reason that I keep YouTube on my video distribution is that is where people are. I know a lot of people aren't going to find this stuff by accident, but they can't find while browsing/searching YouTube if it isn't in there.

My dream in life that awareness of government information and depositories libraries will be as high as that of Mickey Mouse. Any outlet that helps me towards that goal is great as long as they don't demand an exclusive license.

It's a crazy dream, but that's why my "production company" is called "Obsessive Documents Librarians!"

Having said all that, I'll see if I can't find some time to try to upload my videos into IA and Our Media because by my own criteria those are outlets I should be looking into.

too true

That's a perfectly good reason to upload to youtube and I'm glad you have that crazy dream!! maybe you should post to more than one service. I know it takes more time and IA has a somewhat clunky upload procedure, but youtube's quality I've found to be pretty shoddy as you just found out.

I think this is going to be the same thing that happens with google books project (and I've already heard of poor quality scans and missing pages :-) ). If you want quality, you'll go to the Internet Archive (which hosts 176,904 items and counting including memoranda, papers, articles etc documenting the development of the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (Arpanet) of the US Department of Defense, Project Gutenberg, Open Source Books, and lots from American and Canadian libraries), the Open Book Project, or the Open Content Alliance. If you want a quick and dirty search, you'll go to google book search. Maybe that's the way of all e-content in the future -- but I hope I'm not right!!

Come to think of it, that's the way it is with grocery stores, clothing, pizza (mmmmm pizza!!), mountain biking, books etc. For those willing to go the extra mile and aware that there are options -- and more importantly economically able! -- they can get better pizza, more beautiful sunsets, and access to library collections.

We just have to make sure (humming "these are a few of my favorite things!") that the Bronx Pizzas, Rainbow Groceries, Prelinger Libraries, South Sister hikes and Ko Tao's of the world stay alive so that we aren't left with the online equivalent of a strip mall -- google book search and Amazon.com :-)

Every Video Posted to Three Services

"maybe you should post to more than one service."

James,

Every video that I've made and Sarah's made was originally posted to three different sites - MySpace, CHBN, and YouTube. I've been doing this all along. Just wanted to make it clear. Do you think I should list three links for every video on our videos page? I can if it will make the multiple postings more clear.

And this weekend I will go back to IA and OurMedia. Be warned I might bug you privately for upload help! :->

upload enabler

Hey Daniel, I'd be happy to be an upload enabler ;-)

I had no idea you were posting to all 3 all along. That's awesome. Perhaps you can link to CHBN, which seems to have better quality viewing (or one of the more public domain services :-) ) while continuing to upload to youtube/myspace for the serendipity factor. How's that sound?
